In 1853 ahead of the launch of his twin ferry Kangaroo, Captain Goldsmith foresaw the need for suitable wharves on either side of the River Derwent – at Bellerive (Kangaroo Point) and at Hobart – where carriers could load and unload passengers and cartage safely. Those wharves would be a key factor in the ferry’s success.
